Rejoice Always

Spread the love

Two-minute read.

Two words, rejoice always, simple to say, but deeply challenging. Paul’s instructions have no caveats; every day, all the time, we should rejoice. The type of joy the apostle refers to doesn’t come from circumstances, but roots itself in something far more steady, our relationship with God.

Paul talks about a heart posture when he refers to rejoicing. We don’t deny pain or hardship by pretending we don’t experience them. Instead, we anchor ourselves to the unchanging Lord, His goodness, presence, and promises, even when life feels uncertain.

To carry joy into every season, the ordinary, difficult, and even painful ones, we must trust God’s work, His nearness, and faithfulness. The word “always” stretches us. To maintain a constant joy, we must fix our eyes on the Savior and not let our gaze waver.

Today’s verse starts a line-up of verses that gives us a rhythm for living: pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus (1 Thessalonians 5:17-18). When we practice all three together, rejoicing, praying, and thankfulness, we will create a heart posture that God desires us to have. When we align our hearts with the Lord’s, we discover His peace that surpasses all understanding.

Each day, we must choose to rejoice. Our daily decision to trust God enough to find joy in Him, no matter what surrounds us, leads us into abundant living. Even on our hardest days, the Lord will give us what we need when we seek Him.

Only by becoming dependent on the Savior will we experience His joy.

As Paul wrote in his letter to the Philippians, “Rejoice in the Lord always. I say it again: Rejoice!” (Phil. 4:4). We can live a life of rejoicing when we choose to seek God daily with prayer and thankfulness.

Reflection:

What would it look like in your current season to choose rejoicing as a daily posture—not because of your circumstances, but because of who God is?

Joy Thought:

As I fix my eyes on the Lord and walk in prayer and gratitude, His joy steadies my heart and carries me through every season.
