Find Calm

Spread the love

Two-minute read.

Finding calm doesn’t deny life’s stresses, but creates space to remember God’s presence in the middle of it. We can use practical applications to find the Lord’s peace no matter what our circumstances. The Sons of Korah, who wrote Psalm 46, tell us one way we can discover the divine gift: be still.

Simply taking five minutes to sit quietly, turn off distractions, breathe deeply, and focus on God’s presence will help you discover His calm. However, unplugging for five minutes doesn’t come easily.

Stop reading, set a timer for one minute, and try to sit quietly.

How did it go? Did you even do it?

My mind starts wandering all over the place about five seconds into the minute. But I have learned, over time, to quiet myself. Having a scripture to meditate on helps block out the random thoughts. Deep breathing helps me tune out the noises around me. And closing my eyes allows me to focus my thoughts on Jesus. When I do those things, I discover the Lord’s peace and His calm.

As you try to settle yourself into a quiet moment with the Lord, start with prayer. Empty out your heart to the Savior, tell Him everything, the good, bad, and ugly. Then try a simple breathing exercise: inhale slowly for 4 counts, hold for 4 counts, and exhale for 6 counts. Repeat several times while praying, “Lord, You are my peace.”

Calm doesn’t come from having all the answers, but from knowing the One who holds them. When you slow down long enough to remember who created you and the love He has for you, your heart can find peace, even when life feels uncertain.

Journal Questions:

  • What circumstances or worries are making it difficult for me to “be still” and trust God today?
  • When I look back over my life, where have I seen God’s faithfulness, even during seasons of uncertainty or waiting?
  • What is one practical step I can take today to quiet my heart and intentionally rest in God’s presence?
