{"id":2618,"date":"2020-10-21T03:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-10-21T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shop.honestreflections.net\/?p=2618"},"modified":"2020-10-10T18:57:38","modified_gmt":"2020-10-10T23:57:38","slug":"who-can-help-you-with-self-control-in-your-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.honestreflections.net\/index.php\/2020\/10\/21\/who-can-help-you-with-self-control-in-your-life\/","title":{"rendered":"WHO CAN HELP YOU WITH SELF CONTROL IN YOUR LIFE?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Read time: 4 minutes<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>\u201cLike a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self-control.\u201d (Proverbs 25:28 NIV)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">God\u2019s Spirit gives self-control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=self+control&amp;rlz=1C1CHBF_enUS918US918&amp;oq=sel&amp;aqs=chrome.0.69i59j69i57j35i39j46j69i60j69i65j69i60l2.3271j0j7&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8\">&nbsp;Defining self control<\/a>, it is<em> <\/em><em>the ability to control oneself, in particular one&#8217;s emotions and desires or the expression of them in one&#8217;s behavior, especially in difficult situations.<\/em>&nbsp; Examples of self-control: not saying what you\u2019re really thinking, not eating the third piece of cake, not buying things you can\u2019t afford.&nbsp; Jesus gave us help for all of these:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cFor the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline\u201d (<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=2%20Timothy%201:7&amp;version=NIV\"><em>2 Timothy 1:7 NIV<\/em><\/a><em>)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>God\u2019s Spirit is power.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We lack self-control because we don\u2019t seek God\u2019s help.&nbsp; Jesus knew we couldn\u2019t do life without Him, which is why He sent a helper:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cI will send you the Helper from the Father. The Helper is the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father. When he comes, he will tell about me.\u201d (<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John%2015%3A26&amp;version=NIV\"><em>John 15:26 NIV<\/em><\/a><em>)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">God\u2019s Spirit reveals His truth to us as we seek Him.&nbsp; Power is given to us to overcome the temptations of the world:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>\u201c<\/em><\/strong><em>No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.\u201d (<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1%20Corinthians%2010:13&amp;version=NIV\"><em>1 Corinthians 10:13 NIV<\/em><\/a><em>)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Margin helps you avoid temptation.&nbsp; When you create space in your life to keep you from doing something you don\u2019t want to do, I call it margin.&nbsp; For instance, when I was single, trying not to succumb to premarital sex, I made a practice to date publicly.&nbsp; I didn\u2019t place myself in compromising positions, like a hotel room with a man alone.&nbsp; When I was getting to know someone, I did it in group settings with friends.&nbsp; I trusted their opinion, not my feelings.
