But the Lord is righteous; he has cut me free from the cords of the wicked.\u201d (Psalm 129:3-4 NIV)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jesus cuts wicked cords.&nbsp; Plowmen, in today\u2019s verse, are the masters.&nbsp; The long furrows are a metaphor for harsh treatment.&nbsp; I think of Jesus\u2019 whipped back before the crucifixion (cf. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matt%2020:19\">Matt 20:19<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matt%2027:26\">27:26<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Mark%2015:15\">Mark 15:15<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John%2019:1\">John 19:1<\/a>).&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Passion_of_the_Christ\"><em>\u201cThe Passion of the Christ\u201d<\/em><\/a> exemplified&nbsp; Jesus\u2019 beating in a way I will never forget.&nbsp; The sight of His bloody back is not easily forgotten.&nbsp; Knowing He endured the torture for me is beyond humbling.&nbsp; But the Lord cuts us free from the cords.&nbsp; Jesus endured so we wouldn\u2019t.&nbsp; He took the beating we deserved.&nbsp; And when He cried out, <em>\u201cIt is finished!\u201d<\/em>, He finished it for all of us (John 29:30 NIV).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>Jesus cuts wicked cords.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cords hold us captive.&nbsp; When they are whipping our backs, we can\u2019t move.&nbsp; To cut free from them, we must first understand what the cords are.&nbsp; Beloved author Beth Moore describes what holds Christ followers captive:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cA Christian is held captive by anything that hinders the abundant and effective Spirit-filled life God planned for him or her.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u2015 <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lproof.org\/\"><strong><em>Beth Moore<\/em><\/strong><\/a><strong><em>, <\/em><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/work\/quotes\/1008516\"><strong><em>Breaking Free: Discover the Victory of Total Surrender<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our cords are what keep us from enjoying our lives.&nbsp; Those things that control us instead of us controlling them.&nbsp; Reese&#8217;s Peanut butter cups have the ability to control me.&nbsp; If I have a bag of them in the pantry, it doesn\u2019t last long.&nbsp; Once I start eating them, I keep eating them until they are all gone.&nbsp; Thus, I have cut the cord by no longer buying bags of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The term, \u201ccut the cord,\u201d originates from the phrase, \u201cCut the umbilical cord.\u201d&nbsp; The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/common-health-questions\/pregnancy\/what-is-the-umbilical-cord\/\">umbilical cord<\/a> is what connects a mother and child before birth.&nbsp; The first thing that happens at birth, someone cuts the cord.&nbsp; In some regards, Jesus cut the umbilical cord of sin in our lives.&nbsp; He gave us a way out we desperately needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just like a newborn baby can\u2019t cut the cord, Jesus knows we can\u2019t either.&nbsp; We need His help to resist the temptations in our life.&nbsp; Without His wisdom and truth in my life, I wouldn\u2019t admit I eat all the Reese\u2019s cups.&nbsp; But if I don\u2019t admit I eat them, I can\u2019t gain control over them.&nbsp; I have to do the hard work to understand why I can\u2019t have just one. Jesus helps me find the answers.
