Jesus would have been considered a sage. &nbsp; A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.encyclopedia.com\/literature-and-arts\/classical-literature-mythology-and-folklore\/folklore-and-mythology\/sages\">sage<\/a> is a wise or holy figure, often an older man, who possesses insight or understanding beyond that of ordinary people.&nbsp; When His authority was questioned, he answered as a sage would do, with a counter question:<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cJesus replied, \u201cI will ask you one question. Answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. John\u2019s baptism\u2014was it from heaven, or of human origin? Tell me!\u201d (<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Mark+11%3A29-30&amp;version=NIV\"><em>Mark 11:29-30 NIV<\/em><\/a><em>).<\/em><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The religious leaders didn\u2019t have an answer to Jesus\u2019 question.&nbsp; Therefore, Jesus didn\u2019t answer theirs: <strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>\u201c<\/em><\/strong><em>So they answered Jesus, \u201cWe don\u2019t know.\u201dJesus said, \u201cNeither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things\u201d (<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Mark+11%3A33&amp;version=NIV\"><em>Mark 11:33 NIV<\/em><\/a><em>).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The truth is, the religious leaders already knew where Jesus\u2019 authority came from, they just didn\u2019t want to admit it.&nbsp; They realized that if they acknowledge John\u2019s power came from God, they would have to acknowledge Jesus\u2019 authority as well.&nbsp; When Jesus\u2019 authority was questioned, He responded with a counter question.  Avoid traps by asking the right question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong><br><\/strong><strong>Avoid traps by asking the right question.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The saying, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.quora.com\/What-is-the-origin-of-the-saying-when-you-point-a-finger-there-are-three-fingers-pointing-back-at-you\">\u201cWhen you point a finger at someone else, there are three pointing back at you,<\/a>\u201d has possible origins from the Navajo Indians.&nbsp; The Navajos considered it serious business to accuse someone. When you point a finger at someone, you\u2019re ignoring your own faults. The Navajos believe you must&nbsp; look at your own faults before you look at the faults of others.  Jesus says the same thing with different words:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cWhy do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother\u2019s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, \u2018Let me take the speck out of your eye,\u2019 when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? <\/em><strong><em>&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><em>You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother\u2019s eye.\u201d (Matthew 7:3-5 NIV).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The religious leaders were trying to trap Jesus because He was threatening their authority.&nbsp; Jesus exposed their hypocrisy.  We are all hypocrites, whether we admit it or not.  Jesus exposes the hypocrisy within ourselves with His truth.&nbsp; We battle Jesus\u2019 authority in our lives, just like the religious leaders did.  We want our own way, instead of His.
